Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Full Retirement Age (FRA)?
The full retirement age, or FRA, is the age at which you can receive full retirement benefits from Social Security. FRA varies depending on when you were born.
- If you were born between 1943 and 1954, FRA is 66.
- If you were born between 1955 and 1960, FRA gradually rises from 66 to 67.
- If you were born in 1960 or after, FRA is 67.
Benefits increase the longer you wait to retire up to age 70. However, claiming benefits before your FRA will permanently reduce your benefits.

What Impact Does My Spouse’s Benefits Have on My Benefits?
If your spouse claims benefits based on their own earnings record, they will be paid their own retirement benefits first. If your benefits are higher, they will receive an additional amount, so that the combination of benefits equals that higher amount. As a result, you or your spouse taking your benefits sooner may be more advantageous.
